Guide to Attachment Combs

Attachment combs, otherwise known as Snap-On combs or guard combs are designed to help the dog groomer with time efficacy and productivity. However, there are still dog groomers that like to keep up their skill set by scissoring a coat. But with the strains and fatigue of everyday grooming this can put wear and tear on your wrist, elbow and shoulder.

Placing a comb attachment on a #30 clipper blade will greatly reduce scissoring time on body and legs and are particularly useful for giving puppy-type lengths on coats such as the Poodle, Lhasa Apso, Bichon Frise, Old English Sheepdog and many others. Like all grooming techniques it does take some mastering to get use to Snap-on combs, and should only be used on a very clean, knot free coat.

There is always debate in the industry about what length of blade a comb should be placed on. If you use a #30 with a comb it will give you a nice clean clip; however, because the tensioning is tight on a comb you may find teeth break on the blade. If you pop an attachment comb onto a #10 or #15 clipper blade the performance is not as good, dragging the coat and leaving stray hairs.
When applying a comb always attach the comb by first hooking the base of the blade into the spring of the comb. Pull down, and locate the teeth into the comb. Always ensure the comb is seated into the comb before clipping.

Good clipping is an art, and with an attachment comb you can shape heads and bodies without the fear of clipper grazing. If you have a dog that burns at the lightest touch of a blade, it would always be advisable to use an attachment comb.

The stainless-steel set of Attachment Competition Combs from Wahl include 8 different cutting lengths, ranging from 1/8” to 1”. They are all colour coded, to enable you easy vision when choosing the correct size. The peach and yellow are the most popular with the yellow leaving the coat about 5/8” and the peach a little shorter. If you don’t want to buy the set, they are available singularly.
When caring for your combs, the best way to keep them clean is washing in hot soapy water and drying afterwards.

Professional Tips
Blade cutting lengths are measured against the natural lie of the coat. Cutting with the lie of the coat leaves the hair one size longer. Try using a longer comb against the lie of the coat for a smoother, plush finish, or start with a longer comb on the legs and use a #5 or #7 on the body.
